Tyneside Cinema at 80: A People’s History

FREE Filmmaking Workshop

Could you help us tell the history of Tyneside Cinema?

Are you interested in filmmaking?

We’re looking for people who are keen to take part in a filmmaking workshop that will help equip them with the skills they need to capture stories about our iconic cinema and other cinema’s across the city and beyond.

Background

As part of our 80th birthday celebrations we’ve been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help our audience tell the history of Tyneside Cinema from its origins as newsreel theatre in the 1930s to the much-loved independent institution it is today. We’re going to do this in a number of ways over the coming months but want to start by recruiting people interested in filmmaking and give them the knowledge and skills they need to make a contribution.

Who is it for?

You might have shot a few videos on your phone or DSLR camera or you could already have made an award-winning film: this workshop really is for anyone interested in helping us tell the history of Tyneside Cinema and the wider story of cinema-going across the city.

The Workshop

Our one-day practical workshops will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to shoot a film that could end up on the big screen at Tyneside Cinema with your name in the credits!

Topics covered will include: shooting pictures and sound for the cinema screen, finding stories and interview technique.

Everyone who takes part will have the chance to record their own personal story about going to the movies.

Equipment

In order to take part you need to have your own camera capable of recording video and sound. This could be as simple as your mobile phone, a camcorder, or video-enabled DSLR camera.

Note: if you don’t have your own camera but want to tell your story of cinema then please let us know and we’ll invite you along to one of our other workshops to record your story.
