BFI Film Academy


Our programme for 16-19 year olds is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to direct, produce, shoot and edit your own movie and gain a unique insight into the UK film business from industry professionals that will help you get your foot in the door!

As part of the programme, you will:

  • Watch some of the best short films from around the world.
  • Meet working industry professionals and like-minded young people with a passion for film.
  • Learn how to write a script, direct actors, shoot a scene, design a soundscape, and edit your rushes.
  • Share your film at a world premiere at Tyneside Cinema for family and friends.

The programme also helps you work towards a NCFE Preparing to Work in the Film Industry qualification, which develops your creativity and leadership skills and can count towards entry to college or University.

It costs just £25 to take part, and a number of bursaries are available to help cover course fees, travel costs and child care if required.

How to Apply

BFI Fiction Academy is for 16-19 year olds from anywhere in the North East of England who have ambitions to work in film and want to learn more about how the industry works. Whether you aspire to work in production, film journalism or distribution, we want to hear from you!
