A People's History of the Bigg Market

We are delighted to be holding a special screening of this new documentary made by our own Northern Stars Production team, who produced The Dream Palace: A People's History of Tyneside Cinema.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and commissioned by NE1 Ltd as part of their Bigg Market Project: Giving a Historic Heart Back to Newcastle - the film uses a selection of personal stories from Newcastle's Bigg Market area, stretching back over the last century, and combines them with archive photographs, and footage from North East Film Archive. The area’s most recent nightlife scene is merely the tip of the iceberg in its history. It has a fascinating past of commerce and innovation dating back to the middle ages, that has impacted across the nation – from generations of local shop owners, to a winter zoo!

The Bigg Market and its immediate surroundings, is a site of great historical and cultural significance for Newcastle, and must be discussed, celebrated, and preserved.

Please note: This screening is suitable for all ages.
