Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke give award-worthy performances in this tale of the unconventional rise to fame of folk painter Maud Lewis.
Based on a true story, Maudie sees reclusive Everett Lewis (Hawke) hire a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Hawkins) to be his housekeeper.
Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, they fall in love unleashing the dormant artist that lives inside Maudie.
