To mark LGBT History month we’re screening Joe Orton biopic Prick up Your Ears (dir. Stephen Frears, 1987) followed by a panel discussion with Leonie Orton and Orton Scholar Dr Emma Parker.
Playwright Joe Orton is a legendary figure in the history of queer Britain. His extraordinary life story is brilliantly told in Prick up Your Ears, a funny and tragic biopic from Stephen Frears featuring a subversive Alan Bennet script and performances from Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Gareth Longstaff (Newcastle University) in conversation with Joe’s sister Leonie Orton, author of I Had It In Me (2016), and Orton scholar Dr Emma Parker (University of Leicester). It will also be accompanied by Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs), an animated short inspired by the spoof letters of complaint that Orton penned as Edna Welthorpe, starring Alison Steadman. Written and directed by Chris Shepherd.
Presented in partnership with the Queer Media, Culture and Heritage Seminar Series at Newcastle University. Run in conjunction with the annual LGBT History Month Insights Lecture, held on Tues 19 Feb 2019. Find out more here.
