This engrossing political thriller follows the young Queen Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) as she reluctantly ascends to the throne and attempts to navigate a deadly web of Catholic conspirators, court intrigue and vying suitors.
Director Shekhar Kapur plays fast and loose with historical fact to weave a compelling plot set in a Tudor England that drips with the velvet and gold strewn opulence you would expect from a Bollywood director. Blanchett is captivating in the central role, capturing the emotional turmoil and inner steel of a wilful young woman forced to rebuild herself as The Virgin Queen in order to survive.
Large sections of Elizabeth were shot in the North East, and several local castles as spectacular backdrops to the Tudor pageantry on display, including popular shooting locations Alnwick Castle, Northumberland and Durham Cathedral.
