The Color Purple

The Color Purple marks Steven Spielberg’s first foray into straight drama moving away from his signature blockbusters..

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple follows the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a young black girl growing up in the early 1900's. The first time we see Celie, she is 14 - and pregnant - by her father. We stay with her for the next 30 years of her tough life…

The Color Purple is an emotionally rich film with some incredible performances, including the film debuts of Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, that went on to be nominated for eleven Oscars at the Academy Awards.
