Perhaps too powerful for audiences on its release in 1998, Jonathan Demme’s adaptation of Toni Morrison’s classic novel is one of cinema’s greatest films about the legacy of slavery, full of ripe, expressive imagery, and featuring astonishing performances from Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and Thandie Newton.
Based on the novel by Toni Morrison, and set in rural Ohio after the end of the Civil War, Beloved tells the story of a middle-aged black woman, a runaway slave, still haunted by the ghost of her older daughter.
On a difficult journey to find freedom, Sethe (Oprah Winfrey) is constantly confronted by the secrets that have haunted her for years. Then, an old friend from out of her past (Danny Glover) unexpectedly reenters her life. With his help, Sethe may finally be able to rediscover who she is and regain her lost sense of hope.
