AV FESTIVAL 2018: MEANWHILE, WHAT ABOUT SOCIALISM? [PART TWO]
Sat 3 March - Sat 31 March 2018
In his book The Road to Wigan Pier, George Orwell creates a road map for socialism in 1930s Britain, inviting us to think about the question: 'Meanwhile, what about Socialism?' This is the thematic framework for the two-part Festival across 2016 and 2018. A lot has happened in the past two years. The political mainstream in the UK has shifted to the left, political space has opened up and a new consensus is emerging from the 2008 economic crash and years of austerity. If Part One of Meanwhile, what about Socialism? offered a historical foregrounding to the theme, then Part Two presents new work by artists and filmmakers that considers the future. The possibilities of going beyond capitalism, the impact of the fourth industrial revolution and automation, international solidarity against the oppressive economies and unfinished wars, social justice for past inequalities and what it means to be a survivor of political collapse.
