Andy Mark Simpson is a talented young northeast filmmaker who’s created his first feature – a gritty 1970s-set tale of first love set in a quiet Northumbrian village. Teenage artist Mark is stuck in a community in turmoil, and against a backdrop of a crumbling economy and strikes at the local mine he finds himself caught between attraction to new girl Sue, up from London and turning heads, and his best friend Claire.
This brilliant new feature is another example of the talent that we have living and working in the north east, and we’re thrilled to welcome Andy Mark Simpson, director of Young Hearts Run Free, to the Tyneside on Wednesday 13 April to talk about his experiences making his film.

Those in the audience of Silver Screen who complained about the quality of the sound and the focus must have selected memory - this is SO how it was in the 70's. My personal experience of home life, love and social/family interation was so in line with that shown in the film, for me it was an emotional experience. Those who's comments were negative can not have been brought up in a straightforward NE town back in that time. I thought the film was excellent and can hardly believe the driver of the movie was so young and fresh - go go go Andy - you are going to be so succesful - I aam looking forward to the next one.
