In this season’s programme you’ll find five films each picked by a member of our current Pickin’ Flicks crew, and we thoroughly recommend you check out their fantastic choices. There’s even a special ticket price of £4 for 15-18 card holders.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows a typical American high-schooler as he sets out to enjoy one last day of freedom with his closest friends before departing for college. What should be a regular day swiftly becomes an adventure around Chicago, creating a story that is not only witty and slick, but still just as relevant and entertaining over twenty years later.
Pickin Flicks programmer Kiah says: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the greatest teen films, and is the perfect example of the sheer joy and excitement that comes with escaping the confines of the classroom. Everyone loves Ferris, and it is impossible not to love the film too….
Richard Kelly’s brilliant cult classic about troubled teenager Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), a mentally ill boy who, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, starts having visions of a large bunny rabbit who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days. Intense or what…?
Pickin’ Flicks programmer Amanda says: “A tremendous film exploring the notions of time and the laws that govern the world around us, underpinned by a dark, unsettling atmosphere and some disturbing yet likeable characters. Artistically brilliant with an original, imaginative plot – possibly one of the most successful independent films to this day”.
Sofia Coppola’s beautiful debut. A group of boys are fascinated by the five beautiful Lisbon sisters who seem to have it all. But when the youngest sister commits suicide, the boys’ obsession with the family increases even more.
Pickin Flicks programmer Beth says: “Don’t let the title of put you off. This touching film’s portrayal of teen angst has darkly funny moments and along with the soundtrack from Air – which is just as dreamy as it sounds – makes for bittersweet viewing. By the end you will be as mesmerised with the Lisbon girls as the boys in the film are.”
A 15-year-old writer and avid music fan gets the opportunity of a lifetime to write for Rolling Stone magazine and to go on tour with a rising band, Stillwater. His need for an interview with the lead guitarist and his unrequited love for the spontaneous Penny Lane leads him to stay on the tour longer than he’d expected….
Pickin Flicks programmer Lauren says: “Almost Famous is a hilarious but sentimental coming of age story which captures the true essence of rock n roll and simply being a teenager. A modern classic that will inspire teenagers for years to come.”
This refreshing documentary follows four teenagers from different cliques – the nerd, the popular girl, the jock and the outsider – as they complete their last year of high school in small town Indiana and make important decisions about their future.
Pickin Flicks programmer Beth says: “With the simple premise of the documentary, inspired by the teen classic The Breakfast Club, you may think that you’ve seen it all before. But this compelling film, which filmed its four subjects daily for ten months, goes beyond American high school stereotypes and immerses the audience in each of the teen’s lives.”
