The Chronicles of Narnia:
Prince Caspian
Dir. Andrew Adamson. UK & USA 2008. 2hrs 24mins.
Did you think the hero would look like that? Why on Earth did they do that to the ending?! Tyneside Cinema's series of film and literature events continues with its look at big screen adaptations of popular novels and stories.
Like the extraordinarily popular movies based on the fiction of J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien, Andrew Adamson's evolving series of adaptations of C.S.Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia combine classic children's stories and potent adult fantasies. The second film in the planned cycle, Prince Caspian, takes the children back to Narnia on an epic journey to rescue the kingdom from tyranny and restore its magic and its glory.
Kim Reynolds, professor of Children's Literature at Newcastle University and Noel Brown, who is undertaking research into family films at the University, will be leading a discussion of the Narnia adaptations. Join them for the chance to consider Prince Caspian and to find out more about the power and place of children's stories in the modern cinema. Tickets: £7.00/£6.00 (concessions/Friends)
At each Tyneside Cinema Book Club a guest speaker will introduce a film and afterwards lead a discussion with the audience about its journey from page to screen. Anyone can come to Book Club. If you would like to attend, just come along and buy a ticket and sign up as a FREE Book Club member on the day of the screening. See the Children's Film Club page for details of our screening of Roald Dahl's The Witches.

Brighton Rock
Dir. John Boulting. UK 1947. 1hr 32mins.
Did you think the hero would look like that? Why on Earth did they do that to the ending?! Tyneside Cinema's series of film and literature events continues with its look at big screen adaptations of popular novels and stories.
Brighton Rock's depiction of the malevolent Pinkie (played by Richard Attenborough), still haunts modern British cinema today. Adapted by Graham Greene from his own novel and perfectly capturing the sinister atmosphere of the seaside town's underworld, the film delivers a perfect slice of noir.
Adam Baron, author of the Billy Rucker detective novels (Shuteye, Hold Back the Night, Superjack and It was You), and a leading authority on British crime writing and a former resident of Brighton, will host this session. Tickets: £7.00/£6.00 (concessions/Friends)
At each Tyneside Cinema Book Club a guest speaker will introduce a film and afterwards lead a discussion with the audience about its journey from page to screen. Anyone can come to Book Club. Events in 2009 include a look at Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones. More special guests will be confirmed soon. Anyone can come to Book Club. If you would like to attend, just come along and buy a ticket and sign up as a FREE Book Club member on the day.
