The Coen Brothers return with one of their best and most personal films to date. Set in 1967, this oddball, period black comedy/drama about Jewish suburban angst tells the story of Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a college professor and family man whose life is about to fall apart. His job is looking shaky, his kids are indifferent to him, his unemployed brother is living on his couch, and his wife is about to leave him. Struggling to cope, Larry seeks advice from three Rabbis in hope that they will help him with his afflictions and become a serious man. Dazzling, profound and very, very funny.

Dir. Grant Heslov. USA 2009. 1hr 30mins TBC.

Gateshead-born screenwriter Peter Straughan teams up with director Grant Heslov for this wildly entertaining film version of Jon Ronson’s book starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. The film follows reporter, Bob Wilton (McGregor), who stumbles into the story of a lifetime when he meets special forces agent, Lyn Cassady (Clooney). Lyn reveals his twenty-year involvement in a top secret, psychic military unit and shares details of their activities, each more bizarre than the last (including staring at goats in order to kill them telepathically). The film is just as unconventional as the title suggests, marrying an amazing cast with a wonderfully screwy story, very much in the vein of Dr. Strangelove and classic Coen Brothers.

Haneke’s brilliant adaptation of Elfriede Jelinek’s novel features an unforgettable performance by Isabelle Huppert, as a repressed music professor in Vienna. Erika Kohut (Huppert) is an outwardly respectable teacher, with a dark and deeply erotic side to her personality, whose life changes when she enters into an intense sexual relationship with one of her students, Walter (Benoit Magimel). An excellent example of the alienation that Haneke finds inherent in modern society, Huppert and Magimel both won prizes for their extraordinary performances at The Cannes Film Festival 2001, where the film also won the Grand Prix.

Before the screening of The Piano Teacher, Dr. Caitriona Ni-Dhuill from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, Durham University. Caitriona will be speaking about the theme of sexual issues in modern Europe and will also say a few words about the Jelinek novel.
